Celal Sultan Hotel: Ottoman Elegance in the Heart of Sultanahmet
The Celal Sultan Hotel is a beautifully restored 19th-century Ottoman mansion situated in the Sultanahmet district, the historic heart of Istanbul. This is the neighborhood where the Byzantine and Ottoman empires built their most magnificent monuments, and staying here puts you within a 5-minute walk of Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, the Basilica Cistern, and the Grand Bazaar. For first-time visitors to Istanbul who want to immerse themselves in the city ancient history, there is no better location.
The hotel itself is a three-story stone building with the classic Ottoman residential architecture — bay windows, carved wooden eaves, and a courtyard entrance. The restoration preserved the original architectural features while adding modern amenities like air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms, and high-speed WiFi. The interior is decorated with Ottoman antiques — kilim rugs, brass coffee tables, ceramic tiles, and wooden screens — giving the hotel the atmosphere of a private Ottoman home rather than a commercial hotel. Each of the 28 rooms is individually decorated, so no two rooms are exactly alike.
The hotel is family-run, and this is reflected in the service. The owners and staff are personally invested in making guests feel at home, and they are a wealth of local knowledge. They can recommend the best nearby restaurants (not the tourist traps, but the small family-run places that locals actually eat at), advise on the best times to visit the major attractions to avoid crowds, and help arrange airport transfers, tours, and ferry tickets. This personal touch is what distinguishes a boutique hotel like the Celal Sultan from a large chain hotel.
Rooms: Ottoman Character with Modern Comfort
The Standard Double, starting at 2,500 TL per night, is the entry category. These rooms are on the smaller side at approximately 18 square meters, but they are cozy and well-appointed. The double bed is comfortable with quality linens, the bathroom is modern with a walk-in shower, and the room features Ottoman decorative elements like kilim bed runners, ceramic wall plates, and brass light fixtures. Air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, a minibar, and free WiFi are standard. Some rooms have windows facing the street, while others face the inner courtyard — request a courtyard room if you are a light sleeper.
The Superior Room, at 3,500 TL per night, is larger at approximately 25 square meters and includes a seating area with two armchairs and a coffee table. Some Superior Rooms have partial views of Hagia Sophia or the Blue Mosque through their windows, which is a magical sight at night when the monuments are illuminated. The Superior Rooms also have slightly larger bathrooms with both a shower and a soaking tub. These rooms are recommended for couples who want more space to relax after a day of sightseeing.
The Rooftop Suite, at 5,500 TL per night, is the hotel most special accommodation. Located on the top floor, the suite has a private terrace with panoramic views of the Old City — Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and the Sea of Marmara are all visible. The terrace has a table and chairs, making it the perfect spot for a private breakfast or an evening glass of wine while watching the sunset over the minaret-dotted skyline. The suite itself is approximately 40 square meters with a king bed, a sitting area, and an upgraded bathroom. There is only one Rooftop Suite, so it must be booked well in advance.
Rooftop Terrace, Breakfast, and Dining
The rooftop terrace is the heart of the Celal Sultan Hotel. Even if you are not staying in the Rooftop Suite, the terrace is open to all guests and is where breakfast is served each morning. The view from the terrace is one of the best in Sultanahmet — Hagia Sophia rises directly to the north, the Blue Mosque minarets are visible to the south, and the Sea of Marmara shimmers in the distance. Breakfast is a traditional Turkish spread: fresh bread, white cheese, olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, honey with kaymak, hard-boiled eggs, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and unlimited Turkish tea. The breakfast is included in the room rate and is available from 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM.
In the evening, the rooftop transforms into a dining terrace serving traditional Turkish cuisine. The menu includes meze platters, grilled meats, fresh fish, and vegetarian options. The kitchen is small but produces excellent food using ingredients sourced from the local markets. Dinner on the terrace with the illuminated Hagia Sophia in the background is one of the most romantic dining experiences in Istanbul. The hotel also has a bar on the ground floor with a fireplace, comfortable seating, and a selection of Turkish wines and international spirits.
For dining beyond the hotel, the Sultanahmet neighborhood has many options, but the best restaurants are in the back streets away from the main tourist squares. Ask the hotel staff for recommendations — they can direct you to small lokantas serving home-cooked Turkish food at a fraction of the price of the tourist restaurants. The hotel is also a 10-minute walk from the Eminonu area, where you can eat balik ekmek (fish sandwiches) from the boats by the Galata Bridge.
How to Reserve and Practical Information
The Celal Sultan Hotel is located on Kabasakal Caddesi, a quiet street in the Sultanahmet district. The Sultanahmet tram stop (T1 line) is a 5-minute walk away, providing direct connections to the Grand Bazaar, Eminonu, Karakoy, and Kabatas. Istanbul Airport is approximately 50 minutes by car, and Sabiha Gokcen Airport is about 60 minutes. The hotel can arrange airport transfers with English-speaking drivers starting at 600 TL from Istanbul Airport.
Because the hotel has only 28 rooms, it books up quickly during the peak season (June to September) and around major holidays. We recommend booking at least 4 weeks in advance for summer travel and 2 weeks in advance for shoulder season (April-May, October-November). Last-minute bookings are sometimes possible in the winter months (December to March), which is also when the best rates are available.
